Straight from the Expy manual. I tow with a 5. I will use 5 if I am on a long level or downgrade. Rig is much more responsive in 4th at On a recent mile trip my lie o meter gave me.

Like I said: Quote:. I had no idea how our truck was going to pull in the hills let alone on the flats. After a couple hours pulling on our first trip I figured out that 5th worked best no shifting up or down and this kept the tranny temp the same as if I wasn't pulling. Daytripper quoted the manual and that's the best guide, after that you just have to pull your TT and see how your vehicle does. I tow with a Expedition and it depends on the speed, hills and head winds.

At mph I turn it off. From I turn it back on. The torque peak is at on the 5. Do you have the towing package? If not you may have the 3. Use OD with tow haul engaged IF the transmission starts to hunt for a gear.. THEN manually downshift it,. You may also like:. BB code is On. Smilies are On. Trackbacks are Off. Pingbacks are Off. If the transmission is going in and out of lockup or downshifting often it is time to turn off OD. My truck's transmission runs cooker in OD even while towing because drive doesn't go into lockup. The trans temp actually goes up when coasting because it comes out of lockup. A lot of newer vehicles and pickups no longer have an overdrive OD cancel button.

So it takes the worry out of rather you have the transmission in overdrive or not. Older vehicles with a OD cancel button, definitely do not leave on OD while towing. I have a Nissan Pathfinder and tow a camper. I have the option of turning off overdrive, but also have a button called "tow" When I tow the camper I put on "tow" and leave overdrive alone, however I am in South Ga and North Fl for my towing which is almost as flat as Kansas.

Overdrive is simply any gear higher than a ratio direct drive , if using a manual trans, you can damage it by being in the wrong gear overdrive or not , and modern auto transmissions upshift and downshift based off of vehicle speed, and calculated load, so the only real advantages of "turning off overdrive" are slightly less wear on the clutches and brakes from the trans upshifting and downshifting too much, and better engine braking control of your vehicle when slowing and that only applies if you are at highway speeds or slightly under, if you want the engine braking assist as you decel, you need to manually select lower gears as you go.
