I am maxed out though and want to remove an unresponsive person from my games without resigning so I can play people who do play consistently. When someone does resign it shows you that they did. This happened to me tonight the guy who vanished once he found out I was married. No sign we ever had a game going at all. So weird! Not weird. I have 51 games going. And thank you Gina, that worked for me!

I was tired of having to resign and taking a loss. I wanted to practice some solo games when I first started and I was given a German language screen for no apparent reason and there is nothing I can do to ditch the darn thing. I had several of these on my game Android.

Today for no reason I tried going into my Applications Manager and cleared the Data and Cache for the app.

It made them go away. I found that I was forfeited on at least one, and one game remained active but the other person had been waiting for me for 4 days. Worth a try. I have three inactive games. Each appears to be my turn they are large format on the screen next to my active games. Design is grayed out! Ireland Please remove her name from Words with Friends. I have 26 games that will not time out. They still show up as games playing.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled and they r still there. What else can i do? My game looks nothing like the photos shown. Some if my games are over the hour mark but there has been no Auto resign happening here. Does anyone know how to delete abandoned Words with Friends games accessed thru Facebook Messenger?

Zynga has even quit responding. I want out of this game. Please help me! Not happy! I have many people that want to play Word with me. I would like a good reason as to WHY you limit the games to 20?? Just want to know WHY you have such a low limit? When friends AND family are sending requests it looks to them that they are being ignored!! Umm…Cindy…this is an article about Words with Friends, not the company who is responsible for Words with Friends!

We have no way to answer your questions because we are NOT Zynga. All these questions but no answers!!! Come on Zenga! Help us out here! I was able to resign from a game, but am not able to delete the game. It just shows up on my turn board. No option to delete or move it. I just deleted a game and it did not count against me.

Open the game board of the person you want to delete. Now open the chat box and tap the settings wheel in the upper right corner. Choose block user and confirm. And they are gone. I have four games that are days old. I have tried everything to delete them that i have read about. First word in the game goes on the plus tile. The game ends when you play all your tiles or when you or your friend use "pass" 3 times in a row. If you use your tiles first, you get the points from the tiles in your friend's rack added to your final score.

Tiles can be placed so that multiple new words are formed simultaneously using neighboring letters. Use Settings to change your Games With Friends username, log in with Facebook, set a password required if you log in on a new device or add a phone number required creating for Contact List games.

Just a weird glitch in the game I guess, because it has happened when we were nowhere near the end of the game. I gave up and hit " okay" to " you resigned" and the game came back. Very weird but good to know. Rose,, I play on my iPad, but works on smart phones, etc.

Oh, And i took another look and do not even see a resign button. Very weird. I sometimes hit the resign button by accident but it always asks me if I actually want to resign. This had never happened to me before.

I have never resigned a game and pretty sure I didn't this time. The annoying thing is it's just sitting out there with my other active games. Can I get it to go away? Because media outlets were able to cover the incident so quickly, millions of people witnessed the second plane striking the South Tower in real-time a mere 17 minutes after the first impact. This was a defining moment as millions of people around the world experience the events precisely as they unfolded.

The still-young internet was strained that day. Cities represent humanity's greatest achievements - and greatest challenges. The World Economic Forum supports a number of projects designed to make cities cleaner, greener and more inclusive. These include hosting the Global Future Council on Cities and Urbanization , which gathers bright ideas from around the world to inspire city leaders, and running the Future of Urban Development and Services initiative.

The latter focuses on how themes such as the circular economy and the Fourth Industrial Revolution can be harnessed to create better cities. The Pentagon has been repaired, and a shiny, story World Trade Center now punctuates the skyline of Lower Manhattan, but not all wounds have healed.

Many others are living with the absence of the nearly 3, loved-ones who died during the attacks. When DHS began operations in , it was the largest U. As well, the recent withdrawal from Afghanistan was a reminder that long shadow of the attack is still influencing events today, even two decades later.

This article is published in collaboration with Visual Capitalist. The views expressed in this article are those of the author alone and not the World Economic Forum.

US consumer prices have risen to their highest rate since , with consumer prices up 6. Economists say the inflation could be long-lasting. Similar abuses occurred in the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, where guards sexually abused and humiliated prisoners.

The moral stain from this era was so obvious that al-Qaeda in Iraq, the group that morphed into the brutal ISIS, later used the imagery against us—parading its own prisoners around in the orange jumpsuits from Gitmo. And yet American leaders continued to embrace the approach anyway. Military-commission proceedings for Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, allegedly a mastermind of the attacks, and four co-defendants are still in a pretrial phase.

The trial might start next year—or sometime further in the future. In the meantime, the U. At home, we reorganized the government the wrong way. The CIA, NSA, and FBI had all overlooked pieces of the plot; bureaucratic inertia and interagency jealousy had prevented the sharing of intelligence that might have disrupted the looming attacks; the CIA had even known that two of the hijackers, known al-Qaeda operatives, were inside the United States. Certain aspects of the reorganization proved successful.

But the biggest change, the creation of the Department of Homeland Security, the largest government reorganization since World War II, has consistently proved to be a mistake. Congress shoehorned politically charged immigration and border-security agencies into the same department with uncontroversial emergency-management programs—a setup that left the latter neglected.

Unlike the Justice Department, it has no institutional culture rooted in respect for the rule of law. Homeland Security has helped set up scores of so-called state fusion centers, little-scrutinized entities that ostensibly promote intelligence sharing among multiple levels of government but, in practice, have targeted people, such as members of antiwar groups, who do not remotely qualify as terrorists.

The department has also accelerated the militarizing of local and state police departments, which recast themselves as potential front-line responders to terror attacks on the American homeland. Only the shock of that moment at a. One DHS section, the newly formed Customs and Border Protection, experienced a surge of growth so poorly executed that the agency became a major corruption threat in the region near the border with Mexico. New agents and officers were sent into the field before background checks were completed.

This mismatch of resources, training, and personnel helps explain why morale among DHS employees is far lower than in the federal government as a whole. Last summer, DHS agents and officers ran amok across the country following the protests around the murder of George Floyd. Federal officers snatched citizens off the street in Portland, Oregon, and hustled them into unmarked rental vans.

Such episodes reveal all too starkly the danger of creating a new law-enforcement bureaucracy at a moment of national anxiety, effectively enshrining fear into law forever. But nearly every step the U. The attacks put America and China on the same side of a new divide between the world of order and the world of disorder. Since the U. China and India would have risen as fast, if not faster. And North Korea would have been as far, if not farther along, in its ambitions, because China, given a more hostile relationship with the U.

I seriously doubt that George W. Bush would be president. September 11 prompted this housing boom. We would have seen a continuation of a slide throughout much of the next two years. America would be swimming in happiness. Kerry would be president. We would get to airports at the last minute, and the paranoia proportion would be lower. Daniel Pearl would still be alive. Francis Fukuyama would have beaten Samuel Huntington, who would be seen almost everywhere for the crypto-fascist that he is. History would be over.

The week would have seven Sundays. Writers would be writing novels; philosophers, philosophy. Wall Street would be touching the sky. Castro would still be the devil. Oliver Stone would have made a movie about a still-reigning Saddam Hussein. The superrich would be cooler, and more concerned with poverty in poor countries. Palestinians would have a state. Moderate Muslims would control the Islamic extremists. America would be less religious God help us!

And unsurprisingly, Patriot Act provisions have been used to prosecute a Las Vegas vice lord and interrogate a college death-penalty opponent in cases having nothing to do with terrorism. September 11 was a useful excuse. This was a constitutional shift waiting to happen. Efforts to reverse Roe v. Wade and roll back affirmative action and the separation of church and state would have been serious.

A President Bush who believes that terrorism must be fought by the president without oversight or check had to select Supreme Court nominees guaranteed to sanction that. Next: Frank Rich, Columnist. Grand neocon delusions would have remained dormant as Rumsfeld instead busied himself on his grandiose schemes for remaking the Pentagon, not the Middle East. Maybe, but once the inevitable attack came, they too would have won the war in Afghanistan—and, not being tied down in Iraq, maybe they would have made sure it stayed won rather than let the Taliban regroup in the ensuing years.

He would quickly sign on once Stone indicated his intention to make the movie in subtitled Spanish. Next: Leon Wieseltier, Literary Editor. America would have enjoyed the luxury of some more time in the post—Cold War, inward-looking, money-mad bliss. History had ended, remember?

But the bliss would have, in any event, been short-lived. The turbulence in the Islamic world; the fear of modernity and its great representative, the United States; the hatred of Israel—these were all waiting to explode. So was the North Korean nuclear gambit and the Iranian nuclear gambit: The world was, even then, a much more perilous place than many Americans, and many American policymakers, had wanted to know.

It was one of the cataclysmic days in our history, one of the great American experiences of the irreversibility of history. And even the president wants us to stay the same. Once again, this blessed country is weirdly detached from its own historical situation.

Next: Tom Wolfe, Novelist. By now a socialite would be any young woman who has appeared in three or more party pictures taken by Patrick McMullan for any of a dozen or so fat party-picture magazines. How cool would that have been?

Two historic pillars of the New York economy—shipping and garment manufacturing—would have vanished by now. There would be 40 empty piers on the Hudson River, and the only shipping would be an intrepid but decrepit aircraft carrier welded to a dock and turned into a museum. The big news, however, would be the surge in the number of Asian students, which might have rocketed upward by as much as 10 percent a year.

The city would have had two Republican mayors in a row for the first time in modern history. Next: Reverend Al Sharpton. Certainly we would not have had the Iraq war. That would have changed the lives of the soldiers who died.

Freddy Ferrer would have won the Democratic nomination and be the mayor. Race relations would be better under Ferrer. The attack and the fear it generated led to people returning in mass to faith, depending more on religion for guidance and protection, which gave a tremendous revival to those who in my judgment misuse their religious fervor.

Sometimes people can only find comfort by grabbing at something that promises stability. Next: Ron Suskind, Author. Probably not. The view was that Saddam Hussein could be made an example of, that he was an easy mark, and that that would shape global behavior and send a signal to anyone with the temerity to challenge us.

Meanwhile, the growth and violent intentions of Islamic fundamentalism would have reared their heads sometime in this period, whether last week or earlier. Bin Laden is as much an ideology as an individual at this point. And Al Qaeda can be patient, deliberative. Their surviving, along with their ideology, is a kind of victory. It grows on its own, with the exercise of U.

Next: Dan Doctoroff, Deputy Mayor. Dan Doctoroff deputy mayor of economic development and rebuilding. The transformation of lower Manhattan, the expansion the West Side, the extension of the 7 line, the Atlantic Yards, the list goes on and on. Back in , if you had walked one block in any direction from the World Trade Center, it was blighted. That is changing right now, as we speak.

Generally, book transfers are convenient and profitable for the bank because they are immediate, erasing the uncertainty and float time in check transactions. Float time is the time between when the check was written and when the check was debited from the account of the person who issued the check.

A check is a paper promise to allow a person or company to debit a specific amount from the check issuer's account, sometimes on a future date. When a check is issued for a time in the future, it is called a post-dated check. Using a book transfer is convenient for banking customers because book transfer transactions do not require a paper exchange or a trip to the bank to complete.

There is not a real rule here as to how to look at all these companies, but I think these 4 cover all the bases well enough. Self-published books Self-published print on demand Vanity publishers Self-publishing no pay upfront.

Keep in mind that self-publishing takes away the gatekeeper. YOU are the one who decides to publish your book. You put up the money, you promote the book, you do everything but print the book. You can print the book yourself now but the production is still very difficult and you have shipping cost and all that.

So other than hand binding or buying your own print on demand machine, these 4 self-publishing categories are all that exists as far as we know. Here is where the bulk of real competition is coming into play with traditional publishing houses. Using services like Kindle Direct and Smashwords, writers are now publishing their books at the click of a button.

The big deal here is outlet. Ebooks are a big deal if you own a kindle or an ipad or some other ebook reading hand-held. Ebook services not only produce your ebook they let you sell that ebook on their gigantic outlets, like Barns and Noble or the Ebook king Amazon. Selling your books on these services lets you compete with even the big six.

They make your book available on their sites and they TAKE a percentage of your sales. Boom, your both making money off that book that only took your blood sweat and tears to write.

We are in fact seeing the golden age of ebooks dawn, as we speak or write. It is usually the easiest form of publishing because there is no hard copy. This makes it easy because it is cheap and the shipping is really easy. Authors have made a lot of money selling ebooks, and there is much more to come. Ok, so if you want your book to be made up of more than electrons and you really want a physical copy you can go with a service like Lulu.

Lulu was going great up until ebooks became a big thing. It was one of the only real competitors to traditional publishing. Although it never reached any kind of tipping point. Lulu uses print on demand technology. This is the cool technology that started to make, for the first time in s of years, self-publishing a real viable option for authors before ebooks came along. Makes me shiver just typing it.

The way this works is that you write a book quick and easy like before right? You put it in the right format first. You pay Lulu a small fee up front to list your book with companies and an ISBN and some other services, and then you wait.

Lulu waits too. Nothing happens then for awhile while you are waiting…. Lulu springs into action, prints the book, ships the book, and keeps a bunch of the money from the book sale. They then send you a percentage. But your book is real, in the world, you can touch it and even sleep with it under your pillow if you have a good chiropractor depending on the size of the book. Vanity publishers have been around for a long time. They have probably been around since Gutenberg upgraded his printing press.

In the s and s vanity publishers came on the scene. They usually have pricing packages. They would give you a discount for the more you bought, and they usually had a minimum. Ouch, right? I always got the feeling that vanity publishers were used mostly by really wealthy guys who wanted to publish their families history and send it to public libraries.

Either way, the way this works is you write a book, quick and easy again, wink wink, and then you contact a vanity publisher. Some of these guys do exist still. Then you would say order copies, pay the money, and book the books would show up at your house for an additional shipping fee.

This process is not very efficient, and many Vanity publishers have recently gone the way of the dinosaurs. The company is a print on demand company.

Personal responsibility can be contrasted to the idea that human actions are caused by conditions beyond the agent's control. Since the late 19th-century, personal responsibility has become increasingly associated with political conservatism and libertarianism. More recently, personal responsibility has been associated with the reform of social welfare programs e. The earliest known English use of the phrase is by Massachusetts Rep.

Out of the claptrap of law came the confusion-confounding device of corporate ownership. Thereby a man-made person, utterly soulless and therefore without moral identity, nevertheless serves to absorb the personal responsibility of moral beings.

That this contraption prospers under an imperialistic venture must be sheer accident; for, surely, one cannot associate the stock holding widow with the exploitation of some worker in Iran or India.

Nor can the directors be individually charged with moral turpitude, since they act only in a collective capacity and everybody knows that a collectivity is without moral responsibility. Responsibility is as much a choice as it is a skill. You may have been given all the tools to become a responsible adult but at the end of the day, even if you know how to be responsible, being so is a choice. Being responsible allows you to integrate with society in a positive way. A lack of responsibility goes on to make life more complicated and stressful.

The difference between the Levi's and jeans is the jeans have a little extra room in the thighs than the jeans but neither is a tight fit.

The jeans are built to sit at the waist while the jeans are built to sit slightly below the waist. Where is the color code on Levis? Locate the color code on your Levi jeans tag to purchase a new pair in your favorite color. Look inside the jeans for a fabric tag.

The tag is generally white and located at the back of the jeans under the waistband. Look at the tag to find a nine-digit product code, call a PC9. How do I identify my Levis model? Model Number This is the model or lot number of the pair of jeans which is used to identify them.

On many Levi's jeans the model number is printed on the back badge or tag situated above the back right pocket on the waistband. Many also have the model number printed on labels on the inside of the garment. What are Levis? They are made for the modern man. Levi's has taken a regular fit with the perfect straight leg and paired it with a lower rise. This leaves an improved look and feel that is perfect for wearing casually or dressing up.

Will jeans shrink in dryer? Blended fabrics will shrink depending upon the amount of natural fibers in the finished cloth.

Denim fabric with a looser weave will shrink more than one with a tighter weave. Denim will shrink more when washed in hot water and when put in a hot dryer.

Can you put Levi jeans in the dryer? Definition- Treatment that makes fabric old and rusted. Before washing any of your new clothing, check the label! Separate Your Clothing. Turn Your Clothing Inside Out. Use a Smaller Dose of Detergent.

Purchase a commercial dye, and mix it with water. Soak your jeans in the dye, and then rinse out the excess dye. Wash your jeans per normal. You may think that it's safe to wash all your jeans together in one load but do so and the extra dye often put on dark denim to make it look dark can transfer to light-colored fabrics. It's best to wash and dry them in separate loads. The color that rubs off may be impossible to remove from these other items.

White streaks on black jeans can result from the use of too much laundry detergent, undissolved detergent or hard water mineral deposits. Additionally, the fade-resistance of the dye used to color the jeans can affect whether the jeans eventually start to streak, as some dyes fade more than others.

Blue and black jeans tend to fade in the washing machine. The water and soap erodes the dye and discolors them. Jeans will fade regardless, but washing them carefully can help slow the process. Make sure to hang your jeans to dry in an area away from sunlight. The reason denim proved to be so much more popular than duck cotton is twofold.

Denim jeans were originally dyed blue partially because indigo dye was cheap and readily available in large quantities in America, but also because the dye was dark enough to easily hide stains.

Over time, these species diverge evolutionarily into new species that look very different from their ancestors that may exist on the mainland. Like anatomical structures, the structures of the molecules of life reflect descent with modification.

Evidence of a common ancestor for all of life is reflected in the universality of DNA as the genetic material and of the near universality of the genetic code and the machinery of DNA replication and expression. Fundamental divisions in life between the three domains are reflected in major structural differences in otherwise conservative structures such as the components of ribosomes and the structures of membranes.

In general, the relatedness of groups of organisms is reflected in the similarity of their DNA sequences—exactly the pattern that would be expected from descent and diversification from a common ancestor.

DNA sequences have also shed light on some of the mechanisms of evolution. For example, it is clear that the evolution of new functions for proteins commonly occurs after gene duplication events. These duplications are a kind of mutation in which an entire gene is added as an extra copy or many copies in the genome.

These duplications allow the free modification of one copy by mutation, selection, and drift, while the second copy continues to produce a functional protein.

This allows the original function for the protein to be kept, while evolutionary forces tweak the copy until it functions in a new way. The evidence for evolution is found at all levels of organization in living things and in the extinct species we know about through fossils.

Fossils provide evidence for the evolutionary change through now extinct forms that led to modern species. For example, there is a rich fossil record that shows the evolutionary transitions from horse ancestors to modern horses that document intermediate forms and a gradual adaptation o changing ecosystems.

The anatomy of species and the embryological development of that anatomy reveal common structures in divergent lineages that have been modified over time by evolution. The geographical distribution of living species reflects the origins of species in particular geographic locations and the history of continental movements. For example, certain compound leaves of flowering plants are partially homologous both to leaves and shoots because they combine some traits of leaves and some of shoots.

Homologous sequences are considered paralogous if they were separated by a gene duplication event; if a gene in an organism is duplicated to occupy two different positions in the same genome, then the two copies are paralogous.

A set of sequences that are paralogous are called paralogs of each other. Paralogs typically have the same or similar function, but sometimes do not. It is considered that due to lack of the original selective pressure upon one copy of the duplicated gene, this copy is free to mutate and acquire new functions.

Homology vs. This is because they are similar characteristically and even functionally, but evolved from different ancestral roots. Paralogous genes often belong to the same species, but not always. For example, the hemoglobin gene of humans and the myoglobin gene of chimpanzees are considered paralogs. This is a common problem in bioinformatics; when genomes of different species have been sequenced and homologous genes have been found, one can not immediately conclude that these genes have the same or similar function, as they could be paralogs whose function has diverged.

The opposite of homologous structures are analogous structures, which are physically similar structures between two taxa that evolved separately rather than being present in the last common ancestor.

Bat wings and bird wings evolved independently and are considered analogous structures. Genetically, a bat wing and a bird wing have very little in common; the last common ancestor of bats and birds did not have wings like either bats or birds. Wings evolved independently in each lineage after diverging from ancestors with forelimbs that were not used as wings terrestrial mammals and theropod dinosaurs, respectively. It is important to distinguish between different hierarchical levels of homology in order to make informative biological comparisons.

In the above example, the bird and bat wings are analogous as wings, but homologous as forelimbs because the organ served as a forearm not a wing in the last common ancestor of tetrapods. Analogy is different than homology. Although analogous characteristics are superficially similar, they are not homologous because they are phylogenetically independent.

Analogy is commonly also referred to as homoplasy. Convergent evolution occurs in different species that have evolved similar traits independently of each other. Sometimes, similar phenotypes evolve independently in distantly related species.

For example, flight has evolved in both bats and insects, and they both have wings, which are adaptations to flight. However, the wings of bats and insects have evolved from very different original structures. This phenomenon is called convergent evolution, where similar traits evolve independently in species that do not share a recent common ancestry.

Convergent evolution describes the independent evolution of similar features in species of different lineages. The two species came to the same function, flying, but did so separately from each other. Both sharks and dolphins have similar body forms, yet are only distantly related: sharks are fish and dolphins are mammals. Such similarities are a result of both populations being exposed to the same selective pressures.

Within both groups, changes that aid swimming have been favored. Thus, over time, they developed similar appearances morphology , even though they are not closely related. One of the most well-known examples of convergent evolution is the camera eye of cephalopods e.

Their last common ancestor had at most a very simple photoreceptive spot, but a range of processes led to the progressive refinement of this structure to the advanced camera eye.

Eye evolution : Vertebrates and octopi developed the camera eye independently. In the vertebrate version the nerve fibers pass in front of the retina, and there is a blind spot 4 where the nerves pass through the retina. This means that octopi do not have a blind spot. Convergent evolution is similar to, but distinguishable from, the phenomenon of parallel evolution. Parallel evolution occurs when two independent but similar species evolve in the same direction and thus independently acquire similar characteristics; for example, gliding frogs have evolved in parallel from multiple types of tree frog.

Traits arising through convergent evolution are analogous structures, in contrast to homologous structures, which have a common origin, but not necessarily similar function. The British anatomist Richard Owen was the first scientist to recognize the fundamental difference between analogies and homologies.

Bat and pterosaur wings are an example of analogous structures, while the bat wing is homologous to human and other mammal forearms, sharing an ancestral state despite serving different functions. The opposite of convergent evolution is divergent evolution, whereby related species evolve different traits. On a molecular level, this can happen due to random mutation unrelated to adaptive changes. Some organisms possess structures with no apparent function which appear to be residual parts from a past ancestor.

For example, some snakes have pelvic bones despite having no legs because they descended from reptiles that did have legs. Another example of a structure with no function is the human vermiform appendix. These unused structures without function are called vestigial structures.

Other examples of vestigial structures are wings which may have other functions on flightless birds like the ostrich, leaves on some cacti, traces of pelvic bones in whales, and the sightless eyes of cave animals. Vestigial appendix : In humans the vermiform appendix is a vestigial structure; it has lost much of its ancestral function.

There are also several reflexes and behaviors that are considered to be vestigial. The arrector pili muscle, which is a band of smooth muscle that connects the hair follicle to connective tissue, contracts and creates the goose bumps on skin. Vestigial structures are often homologous to structures that function normally in other species. Therefore, vestigial structures can be considered evidence for evolution, the process by which beneficial heritable traits arise in populations over an extended period of time.

The existence of vestigial traits can be attributed to changes in the environment and behavior patterns of the organism in question. In some cases the structure becomes detrimental to the organism. Whale Skeleton : The pelvic bones in whales are also a good example of vestigial evolution whales evolved from four-legged land mammals and secondarily lost their hind legs.

Letter c in the picture indicates the undeveloped hind legs of a baleen whale. If there are no selection pressures actively lowering the fitness of the individual, the trait will persist in future generations unless the trait is eliminated through genetic drift or other random events.

Although in many cases the vestigial structure is of no direct harm, all structures require extra energy in terms of development, maintenance, and weight and are also a risk in terms of disease e.

The vestigial versions of a structure can be compared to the original version of the structure in other species in order to determine the homology of the structure.

Homologous structures indicate common ancestry with those organisms that have a functional version of the structure. Vestigial traits can still be considered adaptations because an adaptation is often defined as a trait that has been favored by natural selection. Adaptations, therefore, need not be adaptive, as long as they were at some point. The biological distribution of species is based on the movement of tectonic plates over a period of time. Biogeography is the study of the geographic distribution of living things and the abiotic factors that affect their distribution.

Abiotic factors, such as temperature and rainfall, vary based on latitude and elevation, primarily. As these abiotic factors change, the composition of plant and animal communities also changes. Ecologists who study biogeography examine patterns of species distribution. No species exists everywhere; for example, the Venus flytrap is endemic to a small area in North and South Carolina. An endemic species is one which is naturally found only in a specific geographic area that is usually restricted in size.

Other species are generalists: species which live in a wide variety of geographic areas; the raccoon, for example, is native to most of North and Central America. Since species distribution patterns are based on biotic and abiotic factors and their influences during the very long periods of time required for species evolution, early studies of biogeography were closely linked to the emergence of evolutionary thinking in the eighteenth century.

Some of the most distinctive assemblages of plants and animals occur in regions that have been physically separated for millions of years by geographic barriers. Biologists estimate that Australia, for example, has between , and , species of plants and animals. For permineralization to occur, the organism must be covered by sediment soon after death, or soon after the initial decay process.

The degree to which the remains are decayed when covered determines the later details of the fossil. Fossils usually consist of the portion of the organisms that was partially mineralized during life, such as the bones and teeth of vertebrates or the chitinous or calcareous exoskeletons of invertebrates.

However, other fossils contain traces of skin, feathers or even soft tissues. Fossils may also consist of the marks left behind by the organism while it was alive, such as footprints or feces. These types of fossils are called trace fossils, or ichnofossils, as opposed to body fossils. Past life may also leave some markers that cannot be seen but can be detected in the form of biochemical signals; these are known as chemofossils or biomarkers.

The totality of fossils, both discovered and undiscovered, and their placement in fossiliferous fossil-containing rock formations and sedimentary layers strata is known as the fossil record. Opponents of evolution point to gaps in the fossil record as proof that the theory is invalid. They say the fossil record fails to show what are called "transitional forms," generally the in-between stages as one type of creature evolved into another.

The fossil record certainly has gaps, mostly because the conditions required to create fossils have been rare ever since life began on Earth.

A very small percentage of animals that have lived and died ever became fossils. Thus, many pieces of the puzzle are missing; some will never be found.

At midnight, Imperia orders for Gerard to be taken to the secret dungeon under the moat, and then tomorrow she will announce that his three years of illness have come to a final, tragic end, and by decree of the law, she will become queen. Thorick enters the dungeon that the Prince Gerard has been stuck in -- who is far from being ill, as his evil aunt claims -- and tells him that at midnight he will be moved to place "without drafty windows", or even any windows. Gerard makes a vow that he shall have his day, but Thorick says he will have many days, all spent in the dungeon, before he callously hands him his "coronation feast".

After Thorick leaves, Gerard finds something moving in his pot of gruel -- a mechanical doll, which is Clockwork Smurf, who was accidentally carried in inside the pot. Gerard tells the doll that he's now stuck with him inside the dungeon, but Clockwork shows him otherwise by pushing up the dungeon door with great strength, just high enough for Gerard to slip out. Entering into the royal kitchen, Gerard tries to convince Mrs.

Sourberry that he is truly the prince, but all she sees is a young boy dressed in rags pretending to be a prince. She hands him some cookies and shoves him out the door into the night, telling him to run along home before the guards see him. Gerard wonders who can help him now, since nobody would believe that a ragamuffin like him was truly a prince. Clockwork now directs him to someplace he wants to take him. At midnight Thorick takes some guards with him to escort Prince Gerard to his "new royal chambers" when they notice that the prince has somehow escaped.

He informs Imperia, who then tells Mrs. Sourberry that the sick prince has now wandered off, and asks if she has seen him. The elderly servant says that all she saw was a poor peasant boy who claimed he was a prince, which makes Imperia realize that she has seen Gerard. Sourberry tells Thorick that she has seen him head off into the forest with a doll.

Unknown to her, Imperia plans to capture Gerard and throw him in a dungeon from which he will never escape, and then burn his toy doll in the fire. Soon Gerard hears Thorick's dog barking and the sound of galloping horses, meaning that Imperia is now in the forest searching for them.

Gerard can't outrun them, so Clockwork points him to a nearby river that he could swim across. Gerard tries to swim, but is carried downriver, away from Imperia, Thorick, and his dog who now lost the prince's scent.

She says they will have to find it again, and orders her troops across the river. Back in the Smurf Village, Handy awakens and decides that he's going to get Clockwork back on his feet again when he notices that Clockwork is gone. But soon he hears Clockwork's noises, and sees that his mechanical Smurf isn't alone. He alerts Papa Smurf to a human being in the village, who then awakens to hear Gerard plead his case for being here, that his aunt is out to take his rightful place as being king of his kingdom, and that he needs their help to stop her.

The Smurfs believe him enough to want to help him, and as they help Gerard get cleaned up, fed, and properly dressed as a prince, Handy looks at Clockwork like a proud father pleased with his child. Out in the forest, Imperia has Thorick and the troops keep an eye out for the runaway prince to make sure he doesn't interrupt her coronation. The next day, the Smurfs and Prince Gerard, now dressed as a prince, are ready to return to the castle for Gerard to retake his rightful place as king.

Now that the dvds have finally been released it is a chance for the younger generations to enjoy the wholesome goodness of the smurfs. The smurfs have been immortalized in movies such as Donnie Darko which promptly reminded me that a child's mind does not care that smurfs are a fiction beyond imagination.

Some years later, Handy built for Clockwork a female companion called Clockwork Smurfette , who initially only fell in love with her creator, but after helping Clockwork rescue his fellow Smurfs from Gargamel she turned her affections over to him. Although Handy gave him a voice box, he generally speaks in a way that makes him sound like Baby Beaker from Muppet Babies. He was a Smurf created by Handy to do various jobs in the village.

In addition, he has a nozzle on the top part of his hat that can be used to dispense liquid, usually in the form of sarsaparilla soup that Clockwork is able to brew within himself by chewing a sarsaparilla leaf. Unlike the cartoon show version which was barely able to speak a word even through Handy's voice box upgrade, the comic book Clockwork Smurf was able to speak in Smurf language right from the start.

However, in the story that introduced him, Gargamel got a hold of him and created a duplicate version of him that would dispense a potion that would mutate the Smurfs into various forms. The real Clockwork Smurf helped his creator return to the village to warn the other Smurfs about the fake Clockwork Smurf. As Papa Smurf took his little Smurfs to Gargamel's castle to deal with the wizard, the fake Clockwork Smurf returned to his master to warn him.

Soon the two Clockwork Smurfs were dueling with each other using kitchen utensils while the Smurfs were contending with Gargamel, until the real Clockwork Smurf prevailed against his duplicate.

He was able to dispense an antidote that would change the mutated Smurfs back to normal.
