One of the first questions people ask when deciding to DIY is how much paint to paint a car. The answer to this question depends on several factors.
If this is not your first time or you are a professional, it would require half the amount of paint than you did the first time. Car paints are available in pre-measured amounts, typically in pints, half-gallons and gallons. Keep in mind that it is a good idea to buy more than what you need if you have no experience painting a car before.
If this is your first time, you would need to use about a gallon for 2 or 3 coats of paint on a car. This will consume an additional amount of paint so better have the extra amount of paint already with you instead of taking another trip to purchase more paint. When painting the car with the same color, a gallon to a gallon and a half would do. These amounts are probably more than what will be needed and professionals will use less.
However, it is safer and better to have more paint than to have less than needed. If you are inexperienced in painting a vehicle, coats of paint on a car would take about 2 gallons. Two gallons of paint is enough if you are going to paint the car with the same color. Also, it will take more paint if the door jambs, under the hood and trunk will be painted as well.
If you are going to use an airbrush technique , it will use twice the amount of paint. How much paint to paint a car basically depends on two main factors: the size of the car and the experience of the person who will do the paint job.
An auto paint shop can also match it. The cost of basic paint colors on ordinary cars are usually cheaper, while specialty paint colors or bigger cars nearer to the top of the range.
Note: Before choosing a shop, make sure that they remove the old paint and prep the car by sanding it. Take off the necessary interior parts of the car and give enough time between coats for the paint to cure. Showroom Quality Service — This involves taking the bodywork to bare metal with sanding. Then, they remove any dents and rust. After that, the shop applies high-quality paint in numerous coats. The best place you could paint is in a very well-ventilated, clean garage.
If you haven't got access to that, many people are able to use DEET and Citronella as bug repellants and apply Durabak in their front yard. You may be of the impression that good automotive paint has to be sprayed on with an aerosol can. If you want to mimic the application of a professional sprayer, it's not going to be possible with a can of aerosol though. The finish would still not look close to professional but don't worry too much, because it won't last that long. If you were to try and use your HVLP gun and air compressor to spray on some professional automotive paint, then you just need to invest in an oven big enough to fit your truck in to dry it!
Even if not, you'll need to spend a lot of time and money on bondo and sanding as that paint will magnify any imperfections in the car - so set aside a week for the project. There is another option though, Durabak. Durabak was developed to address all these problems in a simple DIY package.
Buy at least a gallon plus an extra quart of paint for regular sized trucks and two extra quarts for vans, full-sized SUVs and crew cab trucks. Clear Coat — Always buy a full gallon kit of clear and mix as needed. You can always use leftover paint that has not been mixed with activator for spot repairs or small projects. Same Color Respray — If you are respraying a typical car the same color because the clear has failed or after collision repair, you likely will only need about two quarts of base coat color.
You will still need a gallon of clear, though. I would say a gallon kit will be more than enough. Good luck! It depends on your budget. Single stage which is your enamel, is cheaper, faster to spray and will usually last years if you care for it.
You should have 1 quart of extra. When reduced that will give you 1 gallon of sprayable material, and that should be enough. Hope this helps.
