Almost hand-construction methods were required. They included filling, filing and sanding all seams before painting. All that helped make the car look great, but led to expensive repairs if a body panel needed replacement. Beetle sales were climbing so rapidly that Volkswagen did little to promote the Karmann-Ghia until , when it got 40 horsepower. After that, the car just kept getting better in small ways because it received the mechanical changes that improved the Beetle.

The Karmann-Ghia was one of those cars with virtually perfect original styling, so only subtle styling changes were made as the years passed. For example, larger parking lights, taillights, turn signals and hazard-warning lights followed new U.

Front disc brakes were added in , and a semi-automatic transmission was made available for Horsepower climbed to 53 in ,and the car could hit 90 mph by with its larger 1. The Karmannn-Ghia's main attractions, though, were its sporty appearance and quality, not its performance.

Still, it was fun to drive and could keep up with traffic. Karmann GmbH, producers of the Beetle Cabriolet for VW, to produce a sports bodied car upon a reliable and tested chassis. Initial designs by Karmann were turned down by VW so because of the popularity of the Italian design studios at that time, Karmann turned to Luigi Segre of Ghia in Turin to produce a prototype which would satisfy VW.

The project started in and the plan and body designs were finally approved by VW in when they confirmed that a supply of chassis would be made available to the Karmann factory in Osnabruck. The car was mainly assembled by hand on purpose built jigs and was very labour intensive.

The Karmann Ghia sat on a Volkswagen Beetle chassis that had been widened by almost 4 inches to make this a full-sized coupe. In fact, throughout several changes to the drivetrain, the car was never produced to have more than hp, making the car unusually slow.
