Why diamonds are overrated

Ayer used celebrities and the growing popularity of film as promotions. In movies, characters exchanged diamonds as signs of true love. When starlets took publicity photos, diamonds were conspicuously shown around their neck or finger.

Ask Marilyn Monroe. Diamonds were a status symbol and young women everywhere were obsessed with capturing her look. De Beers convinced men that the more they spend on a ring, the greater their love is. Everything we know about engagement rings are the result of clever marketing.

Have you ever tried reselling a diamond? In his article , Edward Jay Epstein breaks down the secrets of the diamond industry. He explains that since retail stores mark up the prices of their rings, the store would have to pay you the same price they originally paid for the diamond.

This is being generous, of course. Having traditions is great and exchanging rings is still a sweet symbolism of devotion. The real value is what the ring represents. Has this article changed your view on diamond engagement rings? Let us know your thoughts in the comments! Not only is it a beautiful two-tone ring with a center sapphire, but it also has sentimental value. Also, I was totally down for a trip somewhere, and ultimately decided to go to Italy. A few people in the comments were not impressed at all.

That means it costs twice as much. Further, I could even make up crazy standards and convince you that they were real. Because, you know how it works — saying something in an authoritative voice for a few years is enough to make it law. Your diamond ring is only worth what someone else will pay for it. End of story. And a lifetime is a long time.

How on Earth is that considered reasonable? You can buy a used diamond ring at several online sites — or even on craigslist. Are diamond engagement rings overrated? The truth is, it all depends on what you think — not what I think. Only you can decide. Do you think diamond engagement rings are overrated?

I know, I know…. I totally dropped the ball. Pinky swear. Fortunately, last month was pretty boring when it came to budgeting and spending. I mostly just paid the mortgage and bought groceries,…. I wore a really huge fake diamond ring when I was pregnant and my fingers swelled, and I got tons of compliments on it!

I love my ring- actually so much that I declined to get a wedding band to go along with it. Getting two rings seemed silly when I loved the first one so much! Our ten year anniversary is also coming up this summer.

The only part I am not looking forward to? Paying taxes on all the wine we will be bring back. I wrote that on a big site recently and as you experienced, got some grade A flack for it. But I also got some reasonable responses too. I love my diamond rings, but I love them because my husband picked them out for me not because of the value.

I think the two months salary thing is crazy. Of course, they were trying to sell me curtains. Oh boy- see what I mean? But try not to go there late June-August, the canals supposedly smell by then and there are more tourists.

We are going to Venice! Not much time for anything else. I did my homework and found the best deal I could for the money I had. My ring was very…. Why replace that?!

We were poor when we got engaged. My husband was a student who was working in a pizza parlor. When we married, I chose to use the money for an engagement ring to put toward the down payment on a house so all I had was an engraved gold band.

My husband proposing to me nearly 14 years ago was for sure one of the best days of my life. I was elated to announce our engagement and probably even more excited to show off my ring. He had gotten me the most beautiful diamond ring he could on our very modest budget. We were only 21 years old at the time and still in college, so there were hardly funds for an extravagant ring.

After all, his good financial sense was a large part of why I wanted to marry him. As a result, I was completely thrilled with the tiny diamond that he was able to afford. They were just SO expensive! I also began to wonder why I had never questioned this before. I had just expected that he would propose to me with a diamond, just as he probably felt like he was expected to buy a diamond.

If all I am paying for is the name, then count me out. I get way more satisfaction out of finding a great deal on something than I ever would by being able to say that something was expensive.

I have just never cared about status symbols and try to avoid overpaying for these items. I am not knocking anyone out there with a CZ ring, as they are beautiful and you know I appreciate being budget friendly, but in my case, I wanted my new ring to feel like a high-quality upgrade that would be the last ring I would ever need, and CZ was falling a little short.

It was everything I had been looking for! This was the deal I had been searching for — a superior product at a much cheaper price. I have had my moissanite ring for about 10 years now. It is just as beautiful as the day I got it, and I continue to receive compliments all the time. Not only does the lower price of moissanite just allow for a much bigger, more impressive-looking ring, but moissanite truly is prettier and sparkles more than a diamond, so they just tend to garner a lot of attention.
